How to clean glas sparger?
Clean sinter glass sparger immediately after each use with a soft brush. To remove organic soiling like proteins, they can be submerged in hot ammonia or hydrochloric acid. Tetrachlormethane removes oil and lipid soiling. Hot concentrated sulfuric acid with an addition of nitric acid, sodium nitrate or potassium chromate removes other serious contaminations. Alternatively use aceton instead of 1M NaOH. Then flush with 70% ethanol to swamp out aceton. Afterwards flush with plenty of distilled water. Do not leave the solutions react on for several weeks, as the glass would be attacked. Then rinse the sinter material several times with demineralized water (DI) and dry at room temperature or in a drying cabinet with a maximum temperature of 100°C. Avoid concentrated phosphoric acid, hydrofluoric acid and alkaline solutions for cleaning, because they attack the material (cumulatively with increasing concentration and temperature) and therefore affect the operating life of sinter elements. Detergents containing surface-active agents are also unsuitable for the cleaning, because an easy removal by rinsing is impossible.
Please pay heed to the general safety advices when handling acid or health hazardous chemicals!
